Different types of orthodontic appliances

Braces

Traditional braces are the most common form of orthodontic treatment that involve the use of wires, brackets, and bands to move teeth to their desired position. Parts of regular braces include:

  • Brackets - The metal squares that hold the braces in place.
  • Bands - Small bands that anchor the brackets in place.
  • Spacers - Made of elastic or metal, spaces are placed in between teeth typically a week before the braces to make room for the bands.
  • Arch-wires - Guides the movement of your teeth.
  • Ties - Small rubber rings or skinny wires that attach the arch-wires to the brackets.
  • Bucal tubes - Holds the arch-wire ends in place.
  • Small elastic bands or ligatures - Helps the arch-wires stay on the brackets
  • Springs - Plated in between the brackets and on the arch-wires to pull, open, close or push space between teeth.
  • Elastics or rubber bands - Connected to hooks on brackets and worn between the lower and upper teeth, bands help move the upper and lower teeth through continuous pressure.

Invisalign®

Invisalign® are clear aligners made of plastic that are customized to fit your mouth and move your teeth into place. These clear aligners can be removed,  making brushing and flossing easier. With Invisalign® treatments, you receive a series of aligners that gradually straighten the teeth with no brackets or wires needed. Not all patients are candidates for Invisalign® as severe orthodontic conditions may require extensive treatment.

What to expect with orthodontic treatments

During your first consultation for orthodontic treatments, your dentist will perform a full exam and X-ray of your teeth and jaw. With this information, your dentist can identify where there’s crowding, misalignment, gaps, or bite issues and discover any underlying reasons behind the orthodontic issues.

You will then be given an orthodontic treatment recommendation, including the estimated length of the treatment, the cost, and any additional dental work you may need. Request an appointment today to book your initial orthodontic consultation.
