Additional Care Dentistry Services in Calgary

If you’re looking for dental procedures that don’t quite fall under general dentistry, preventive care, or restorative solutions, most dental offices in Calgary offer additional services. The good news here is that whatever type of dental care you’re looking for, your family dentist can offer or recommend a treatment plan. The goal is to get you to a place of optimal oral health, whether that’s in-office procedures or a referral to a specialist.

At Stoney Trail Dental, we offer the following additional dental services:

Laser treatments

Laser dentistry is an innovative approach to dental care that uses extremely focused light beams to alter or remove tissue. When patients are faced with gum surgery, tooth decay treatment, or other oral issues, laser treatments are a minimally invasive option.

Laser dentistry can:

  • Reshape gums
  • Treat gum disease
  • Treat root canal infections
  • Treat gum inflammation
  • Remove oral tumours
  • Remove cold sores or reduce recovery time from cold sores
  • Remove tissue that causes sleep apnea
  • Regenerate damaged nerves

Snoring and Sleep Apnea Solutions

Snoring and sleep apnea can be disruptive to your life, leaving you feeling lethargic and perpetually tired every day. Sleep apnea can cause serious health complications when left untreated, including high blood pressure and heart trouble. Snoring and sleep apnea can both contribute to oral health problems and be caused by dental issues.

Some of the solutions that a dentist will offer to help with snoring and sleep apnea include:

  • Tongue retaining - Snoring and sleep disturbances can happen when the airway is blocked. A retaining device can hold your tongue in the correct position to keep airways open, which can reduce or eliminate snoring and significantly help with sleep apnea.
  • Nightguard - A night guard aids in keeping the airway open and prevents bruxism (grinding of the teeth at night).

Temporomandibular Joint Treatment

Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) dysfunction can cause pain in the jaw joint and in the muscles that control jaw movement, making it difficult to eat, talk, and move the jaw in any way. Your family dentist can assess and determine what may be causing TMJ, such as nighttime grinding, arthritis, genetics, or an injury. TMJ can worsen over time if left untreated

Some TMJ treatment options include:

  • Bite plates of splints that prevent grinding
  • Relaxation therapies to reduce stress
  • Emotional and mental therapy to get to the root of stress
  • Surgery, if all other treatment options are unsuccessful

Space Maintainers

Dental space maintainers are a temporary solution to prevent the teeth from shifting when a tooth is lost. In children, space maintainers are used to ensure that permanent teeth grow in the correct spot between the time that baby teeth are lost and before permanent teeth start to grow. In adults, space maintainers are used until a permanent solution, such as a bridge or implant, is performed.

In closing, whatever your concerns are with your oral health - whether it’s pain relief, aesthetic purposes, or restoring the health of your teeth and gums - there is a solution. Your dental care team is here to help you achieve the smile that you’ve always wanted!
